The Hellbender
The Hellbender Student Film Festival draws inspiration, and its name, from the amazing hellbender, one of the largest species of salamanders in the world. The hellbender, also know as the snot otter or devil dog, has unique significance for Missouri which happens to be the only state that is home to both subspecies of the amphibian, the eastern and Ozark varieties. Measuring about two feet in length and surviving up to 25 to 30 years in the wild, this amazing salamander spends its life submerged on the stream bottom only rising to the surface to breath air through its skin. While this impressive creature spends its largely solitary life beneath rocks and logs, we at the Hellbender Student Film Festival encourage everyone to attend our screenings and be a part of the festivities.
